Into the Wilderness: Part 1- Savoring Survival Mode

Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19 (ESV; emphasis mine)   WILDERNESS. This one word reflects so many connotations! I wonder, what image pops into your head when you picture yourself in the wilderness? Are you trudging through a scary, treacherous, and unknown landscape, like Indiana Jones, desperately trying to stay alive? Or are you more like a pirate on a scavenger hunt, combing the beach for treasure and learning how to be resourceful? Maybe, your wilderness is even more peaceful than that? Perhaps you are…

Batteries Not Included: Part 2- The Art of Celebration!

This is the day the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 (NLT) TODAY. A simply powerful word, yet so often underappreciated and taken for granted. I’m not really sure when the shift happened, but somewhere between the simple pleasures of childhood and the increasing pressures of adulthood, I have often found myself rushing through, or finding ways to avoid, TODAY. It is a recent realization that stopped me in my tracks. Here I am intentionally seeking time with God, in which I have seen Him move mountains for me! Yet, I still find myself stuck in a rut that mixes a lack of…

Batteries Not Included Part 1: Tapping Into the Power of God

Now may the God of hope fill you with ALL JOY AND PEACE in believing, so that you will abound in hope BY THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. Romans 15:13 (NKJV, emphasis mine)   How many of us run at a pace that requires caffeinated beverages not as a luxury but, rather, as the gasoline that keeps us fueled for the next trek of the race? From the constant “dings” of the next notification to the “I needs” of family, colleagues, and friends, there are many things vying for our attention and energy. Add in the unexpected challenges, or the tragic, and it is not surprising that we feel…

    Liar, Liar! Pants on Fire!!!

“The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.” Romans 16:20 (NIV)   Do you ever have one of those weeks where it hits so hard that you are literally pushed to your breaking point, and you feel like you are losing your mind? You know, one of those weeks where, despite every tool in your tool belt, you end up not only losing your cool repeatedly, but you are not even sure that you deserve to be called a Christian?   For me, last week had been exactly that kind of week. People were getting under my skin…

    Everyday Gestures of Love

Love is in the air! As the month of February approaches, everyone gets ready for Valentine’s Day. Some exchange cards, purchase overpriced flowers, and there is candy galore! As far back as I can remember, we exchanged valentines at school, and my parents got us a small gift and a card expressing sweet thoughts.   Some people call it a Hallmark-created holiday to elicit more spending on cards, flowers, and candy. Over the years, even single people have embraced the holiday, and now, ladies even do “Galentine’s Day” events! My oldest daughter switched schools this year, and Valentine’s Day is a big deal there! Parents are encouraged to order balloons…

    Love Through Fingerprints (Part 1)

Happy (almost) Valentine’s Day! While praying over what to write about for my blog entry this month, I kept coming up blank. Perhaps the pressure of posting on Valentine’s Day was getting in my head! I considered writing about love, marriage, friendship, and similar topics related to this Hallmark holiday; however, every subject that came to my mind fell flat in my heart. When preparing for my blog entries, I pray about what God wants me to write about. When I am going through challenges in my life, I pray writing about them brings clarity to me. I pray sharing my difficulties allows others to feel they are not alone…

    “Light Of The World”

Recently, I was driving home from working at a clinic and I noticed how dark it was outside. The Indianapolis area is on Eastern Standard time. I remember looking at the dashboard clock when I realized how dark it was: 6:35 pm. Not very late into the evening for what seemed like midnight darkness. As I drove into a clearing, out of the trees, the moon was so bright and beautiful! Instantly, I could see the road in front of me more clearly. I could see some animals in a pasture and someone walking a dog on a paved trail. Then I heard the words “Light of the World.” What I didn’t tell…

    Blessed by Scripture

The women of the Salty Sunshine compiled a list of Bible Scriptures we feel particularly drawn to during Christmastime! Before we share those Scriptures with you, our curiosity was piqued regarding Bible facts. Did you know…? In the ESV, “Jesus” occurs 925 times, all in the New Testament. The only book of the New Testament that doesn’t contain the name Jesus is 3 John. (Depending on which translation of the Bible you are reading, the number of times “Jesus” is mentioned will vary.) Ref: bibleq.net The KJV has the word “love” occurring 310 times! Ref: christianbiblereference.com The NIV mentions “forgive” 74 times. Ref:christianbiblereference.org “Hope” is seen in the KJV 130…
