What Does the Bible Say About…

All right, friends. In my last blog, I said I would read The 5 Love Languages of Children and bring what I learned to the readers of The Salty Sunshine. I apologize; the follow-through on that has to wait. Here’s why: In the last 24 hours, I have read about or witnessed MANY people hurting. These hurts have been shared on Facebook and through texts, phone calls, and emails. The pain being experienced by people in my life is overwhelming. My nursing peers have lost another patient, my friends are struggling with anxiety/depression, and I am reading shared concerns from successful moms who are doubting their abilities and worrying about…

A Mess too Big to Bless?

It’s a Monday…again. I knew it was coming back—it does every week. Mondays are like the movie “Groundhog Day” around here. Laundry needs folded, dishes need washed, and even though I recall cleaning the house thoroughly just seven days ago, there is no evidence of that anywhere. I am in my typical Monday-state of rushing from room to room collecting misplaced items to return to their proper homes when I step in something wet as I enter the living room. I take a deep breath before I brave investigating the source of my now-damp sock. “Please don’t be pee,” I say to myself, as I look down to discover a…

    Spoiler Alert

For her eighth grade English class, my daughter is currently reading one of my all-time favorite books. I won’t tell you the title for fear of spoiling it for anyone, but she knows how much I love the book and was excited to bring it home and tell me she had begun reading it. She was only a chapter or two in when it—the thing she almost always does—started… Her: “Why did so-and-so do such-and-such?” Me: “Read the book.” Her: “When do we meet so-and-so?” Me: “Read. The. Book.” Her: “Does so-and-so die? What about so-and-so? Please tell me so-and-so lives!” Me: “READ THE BOOK!” Her (skips to the end…

    Forgive Not, Forget Not

Matthew 6:14-15 (NKJ), Jesus says, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”   When I was a young child, forgiving was a word that was so hard for me. Like, how can you forgive your brother, who pulled your hair and ran as fast as he could to the bushes, while you screamed bloody murder? Then, to top it off, you received a 1960’s scolding (most know what that is) from your mother for screaming! “Laura Mignon, I’ll give you something to cry about. Stop that screaming!”…

    Springing Into Submission

“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”   (James 4:7 New American Standard Bible)   I don’t know if I am the only one who struggles with submission. Initially, my face physically cringes when I simply hear the word! Submit? Me? NO WAY! I’m not letting ANYONE rule over me! I’m no doormat!! At least, that is what my internal monologue screamed at the word, “submission”—well, until recently.   In previous “submissions” of my writing, I addressed the lies of the enemy and the way that he wants to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10) anything good.  What is good is that GOD IS…

    Teaching Moments

“Lucas, can you please pick up your toys before dinner?” (Me) “No. I don’t want to.” (Lucas) “Lucas, that isn’t how you answer Mommy. You say, ‘Yes, Mommy.’ And then you are obedient and do it.” (Me) “No! I don’t want to.” (Lucas) “That is being disobedient. You are not listening to me, and that is not how you respond. Now you are getting a consequence.” (Me) “NO!! Okay, I’ll do it.” (Lucas) “I’m glad you are doing it, but you are still getting the consequence for being disobedient. When Mommy tells you to do something, you need to listen and obey, and you need to do it with a…
